Acid reflux is a digestion disorder also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux (GERD). It is a state of digestion disorder in which the gastric juices present in the stomach travel back into the esophagus. GERD is a persistent situation; once the treatment starts it is life long.
Pepsin is a gastric juice in the stomach which breaks down the proteins consumed into fine particles and makes the digestion process simpler and speedy. This enzyme is acidic in nature. In the digestion process the food particles are moved from the stomach muscle into the small intestines where they are further disintegrated and converted into bowl. GERD occurs when the valve connecting the stomach and the esophagus opens at the wrong time, this misdirects the enzymes and it backtracks. This action may also be termed as regurgitation. This action disrupts the whole digestion process and causes discomfort and inflammation.
Acid Reflux Causes
It is very common for acid reflux to transpire and mostly it is not even noticeable. Food items which are very rich and heavy to digest like chocolates, high cholesterol diets, oily foods, caffeine preparations, citrus fruits, spicy food, garlic, onions, alcohol etc cause the feeling of indigestion eventually resulting in acid reflux. GERD is often experienced during pregnancy as the elevated hormones create pressure in the lower abdomen and cause this heavy feeling.
